Rival GM: Bryce Harper Will Sign With Phillies

Aug 20, 2018 8:16 AM

Bryce Harper indicated in spring training that he wouldn't discuss his upcoming free agency publicly, but that hasn't stopped the chatter around the slugger.

There has been speculation that the Chicago Cubs, Los Angeles Dodgers, San Francisco Giants, Philadelphia Phillies and New York Yankees could show strong interest in Harper.

One general manager, however, sees a potential favorite to sign the right fielder.

"I think Harper winds up with the Phillies," a rival GM predicted.

Rangers Could Save $6M If Cubs Pick Up Cole Hamels' Option

Aug 20, 2018 8:10 AM

Cole Hamels has pitched very well for the Chicago Cubs and his performance could end up saving the Texas Rangers $6 million.

The Cubs have won all four of Hamels' starts and the left-hander has a 0.72 ERA and 0.88 WHIP in 25 innings.

The trade agreement between Texas and Chicago calls for the Rangers to send the Cubs approximately $2 million in salary for the remainder of this season and the equivalent of the $6 million buyout in his contract for next year.

However, the Rangers would only be responsible for the money if the Cubs opt out of the deal.

Hamels option for 2019 is $20 million.

If Marlins Can't Sign J.T. Realmuto To Long-Term Deal, Trade Likely

Aug 16, 2018 8:01 AM

The Miami Marlins are expected to gauge J.T. Realmuto's interest in a long-term deal this winter.

If the catcher isn't receptive, there's a good chance he'll be traded. He won't be a free agent until after the 2020 season.

"He's probably the best all-around catcher in the game now. Would hit 25 homers in some ballparks. You have to try to keep him; there's no catching out there. An offer of five years, $100 million would be a good starting point to offer him," a scout told the Miami Herald.

Padres Interested In Bringing Back Freddy Galvis

Aug 13, 2018 8:10 AM

Freddy Galvis will be a free agent this coming offseason, but the San Diego Padres have interest in re-signing him.

The Padres acquired Galvis from the Philadelphia Phillies in December in exchange for pitching prospect Enyel De Los Santos.

"We love Freddy, love him in a Padres uniform," Andy Green said. "All of that stuff will take care of itself in due time. But as a manager, I absolutely love having him on the club."

Galvis, 28, is hitting .237/.296/.355 from the shortstop position.

Jayson Werth Called Every Team But Mets While Looking For Job

Aug 9, 2018 8:09 AM

Jayson Werth has retired after 15 Major League seasons, but he didn't enter 2018 planning to hang up his cleats.

Werth played 36 games with the Seattle Mariners' Triple-A affiliate before opting to retire.

While appearing on Howard Eskin's podcast, Werth discussed his journey to land a job this past offseason.

"I had offers in November and I was advised by my former agent to wait. Ill-advised, I guess. Spring training came and went and by about halfway through spring training, I felt like I should -- I trained all winter, I was ready for spring training -- so I took matters into my own hands. I called every team -- you'll love this one  -- I called every team but one to try and get a job," Werth said.

"The team I didn't call? The Mets."

"I wouldn't play for them."

Werth spent four seasons with the Philadelphia Phillies and seven with the Washington Nationals, which would seemingly be the reason for his animosity toward the Mets.
